Sergei Miroschnichenko’s 1987 documentary deals with the Soviet repressions of the 30s by focusing on forced resettlements of entire population groups. On the same program, four other recent glasnost documentaries: V. Mirzoyan and Tatyana Paulan’s short feature The Tailor, about middle-aged victims of the Brezhnev era; Mikhail Pavlov’s The BAM Zone: Permanent Residents; Murat Mamedov’s Early on Sunday, about an old woman from a Ukrainian village chopping firewood in a forest; and Grigor Arutunyan’s Theatre Square, about demonstrations in Armenia over the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh.
