Catherine Deneuve gives a controlled but devastating performance as a divorced bookseller unhinged by the death of her adolescent son (Adrien Jolivet) in a car crash. To the surprise and consternation of her family and friends, she redirects her maternal feeling toward her son’s best friend (Thomas Dumerchez), whose negligent driving caused the accident, and in time her obsession with him crosses the line between inappropriate and criminal. Working from an exemplary script by filmmaker Christophe Honore (Dans Paris, La Belle Personne), director Gael Morel eschews melodrama, tapping into human mourning in its rawest form. In French with subtitles. 90 min.
