Bachelor Weekend

A prissy set designer (Hugh O’Connor) learns to loosen up when his macho brother-in-law-to-be (Peter McDonald) tags along on his camping trip bachelor party. This innocuous Irish comedy satirizes both macho and metrosexual types without insulting either and respectfully depicts the protagonist’s gay brother. It’s most interesting as an illustration of how middle-class society is growing less rigid in its conception of gender—which is another way of saying that the jokes aren’t especially funny. John Butler directed a script he cowrote with McDonald; the Irish release title was The Stag.
