Loosely adapted from Alex Flinn’s young-adult novel, this Beauty and the Beast update is a pallid, formulaic teen romance that might have benefited from a little snark. Alex Pettyfer (I Am Number Four) hangs a dead weight around the movie as a privileged golden boy who insults everyone in sight; Mary-Kate Olsen, dressed in runway goth, plays the high school witch who turns him into a beast (bald, tattooed, and pierced, with rad silver ornaments in his nose and forehead). Helping restore the hero are Vanessa Hudgens as his love interest, Lisa Gay Hamilton as his put-upon maid, and, in the only funny bits, Neil Patrick Harris as his blind tutor. Writer-director Daniel Barnz could have used a little magic himself.
