Amsterdam’s the Ex are one of the most interesting rock bands of the past two decades, and I was excited at the prospect of a documentary that might trace their transformation from chaotic anarchist punks to brilliant intuitive improvisers. Unfortunately this 2001 video by Swedish filmmakers Christina Hallstrom and Mandra Waback is ploddingly amateurish, a jumble of talking heads (including Chicagoans Steve Albini and John Corbett) and poorly shot, poorly recorded performance footage. There’s little exposition of the creative process and often no narrative thread. 82 min.
