Gore and humor often depend on each other in this mildly engaging action movie, in which Jet Li defects from a regiment of biochemically altered supersoldiers in China to become a pacifist librarian in Hong Kong. After his best friend, a police detective, gets involved in an escalating drug war, Li dons a mask so he can enter the fray without appearing hypocritical. Eventually he’s pitted against a member of his old regiment, whose fishnet stockings may have something to do with the threat she poses. Deliberately comic romantic tension figures in a subplot featuring Karen Mok (Fallen Angels) as one of Li’s bookish coworkers. Daniel Lee directed a screenplay by Teddy Chen, Joe Ma, and producer Tsui Hark; with Lau Ching Wan, and Francoise Yip.
