In this sequel to the 1998 thriller featuring the Marvel Comics character that’s half vampire and half human, the action moves to a dank netherworld where vicious uber-vampires are being bred in a plot to dominate the world. To wipe them out, Blade (Wesley Snipes) works out a truce with his nemesis, a vampire ruler who lends him a motley crew of soldiers. Whistler (Kris Kristofferson) returns too, as a cynical father substitute for Blade—part of the film’s underdeveloped subtext involving untrustworthy authority figures. Scriptwriter David S. Goyer also plays with the notion of genetic engineering and with tired analogies to AIDS and coke addiction, and he piles on the laughable dialogue. Director Guillermo del Toro (The Devil’s Backbone) tries to cover up using kinetic editing, chiaroscuro cinematography, and a spooky sound design, but everything gets bogged down in one spectacularly gory action sequence after another. 108 min.
