The trials of an Italian immigrant worker in Switzerland are rendered episodically but sometimes affectingly in this 1973 Italian feature by Franco Brusati. As the victimized hero, Nino Manfredi grows from self-pity to self-awareness as he experiences the infinite subtleties of Swiss racism and becomes increasingly disgusted with the sentimental defeatism of his coworkers. Brusati has a hard time drawing together the disparate elements of his screenplay, but he creates a few remarkable images—particularly in an unforgettable scene set in a chicken coop, in which Manfredi discovers just where he fits in the Swiss scheme of things. In Italian with subtitles.
