Like the recent remake of The Women, this wedding comedy suggests that just below the surface of every female friendship lies a toxic pool of envy and cutthroat competitiveness. A flashy, aggressive lawyer (Kate Hudson) counts as her best pal a sweet and supportive middle school teacher (Anne Hathaway), but they become bitter enemies after their nuptials are coincidentally booked for the same date at New York’s Plaza Hotel. With artifice as layered as the tiers of a marzipan cake, this resembles nothing so much as a stale Rock Hudson-Doris Day comedy: you know that eventually the combatants will recognize they love each other the most. Gary Winick (13 Going on 30) directed; with Candice Bergen. PG, 88 min.
