Effects designer turned director Pitof’s take on the leather girl with a thing for bling is sleek and glossy, but he should have fast-forwarded through her transformation from underdog to top cat and done more to develop her miscreant side—Halle Berry’s masked avenger is practically a stand-in for Batman. The screenplay’s a hodgepodge of witchcraft, ancient Egyptian lore, pulp feminism, and a dash of S-M; Sharon Stone as a villainous cosmetics maven knows how to play it tongue-in-cheek, but Berry doesn’t—plus she’s saddled with a nonsmoldering love interest (Benjamin Bratt). Cinematographer Thierry Arbogast is the real superhero; his homage to noir thrillers compensates for the spotty CGI and rescues the movie from sex-kitten kitsch. PG-13, 104 min.
