Kenneth Branagh directed this live-action remake of the classic Disney animation, approaching the project as if it were another of his Shakespeare adaptations. Aside from dropping the songs, he treats the 1950 film as a hallowed text, making very few changes but drawing out the themes through careful staging and direction of actors. Particularly strong are the scenes with the wicked stepmother (Cate Blanchett), a vain nouveau-riche type made spiteful by years of disappointment. The visual design is exquisite, coming remarkably close to replicating the original movie’s Technicolor splendor. With Lily James, Derek Jacobi, Stellan Skarsgard, and Ben Chaplin.
