Class Enemy

Group dynamics and authority figures are expertly dissected in this engrossing Slovenian debut feature (2013), about a group of high school students who blame their commanding German teacher (Igor Samobor) for the suicide of a beloved classmate. Visually stifling, the film deals primarily in medium close-ups set against the walls of the school, which suggest a sort of spiritual confinement that propels the students in their crusade against the teacher and, before long, the school administration. The screenplay, cowritten by Nejc Gazvoda and director Rok Bicek, treats both the teacher and the students with sympathy and skepticism, testing the viewer’s allegiance as the stirring drama unfolds. In Slovenian and German with subtitles.
