This engaging Pixar animation plays magnificently with elements of Mexican folklore and fine art. A ten-year-old boy who dreams of becoming a musician travels from his village to the Land of the Dead to find the spirit of the man he believes to be his estranged great-great grandfather, a celebrated singer who died in the 1940s. When the boy arrives, however, his other deceased relatives try to steer him away from music and return him to his family in the world of the living. Directors Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3) and Adrian Molina mine sentiment from the conflict between individual desire and familial responsibility, but their grandest achievement is the intricately designed spirit world, full of allusions to folk art and modern painting. The voice talent includes Gael García Bernal and Benjamin Bratt.
