The fad for citizen’s band radio never took off in movies the way it was supposed to, and Sam Peckinpah seems to have been left high and dry with this 1978 trucking epic, based (as much as anything could be) on the hit single by C.W. McCall. It looks like a potboiler: only a few of Peckinpah’s themes are present, and they’re mostly left undeveloped. But Peckinpah can still stage a fight scene better than anyone, and the film establishes its own crazy rhythm as it runs off wildly through most of the southwest. With Kris Kristofferson and Ali McGraw, neither of whom has the Peckinpah punch, and a fine supporting cast.
