Aldo Fabrizi is the cop, popular comedian Toto the thief in this 1951 social comedy of criminal anarchy and authoritarian buffoonery. One good chase at the beginning (through an incongruous postwar landscape: neorealism as surrealist verite), and Toto is always an interesting essay in vernacular tastes; otherwise, it’s run-of-the-mill vehicle, with a few odd location touches.
