The first popular success of Indian writer-director-actor Guru Dutt, this noirish 1954 musical mixes crime, romance, and social commentary, as a taxi driver loses his garage job and goes to work for a gangster, not realizing that his new boss is planning a bank robbery. The film focuses on the love between the driver and the garage owner’s daughter, but it’s most interesting for its pastiche of styles: while the musical numbers are well integrated, there’s an odd split between cinematic episodes such as a car chase and relatively stagy scenes in which the characters seem to pose for the audience.
