When Anne Bass plucked a young Cambodian temple dancer from poverty and brought him to New York to study ballet, she did more than just transform someone’s life; videotaping his progress over the years, she laid the groundwork for this vivid documentary about a rare talent, his extraordinary teachers, and cross-pollination of the arts in the global era. Ballet students start young, but Sokvannara “Sy” Sar, beginning at age 16, blooms under the exacting tutelage of Olga Kostritzky, then attends the School of American Ballet. He participates in a renowned competition in Varna, Bulgaria, soon afterward, then finds another mentor in Peter Boal of the Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle. This is a Cinderella story with leather, not glass, slippers. In English and subtitled Khmer. 88 min.
