Three troubled men in middle America struggle against fate in this dark, intelligent indie drama by local writer-director Davidson Cole. Daniel J. Travanti stars as a weary alcoholic ex-schoolteacher whose wife has left him for a painter, Edward Cunningham plays a creepy wedding photographer with a voyeuristic streak, and Cole is a sad sack who aptly describes himself as “a magnet for freaks and assholes.” The three cross paths at a dive bar, though their stories are also intertwined by the women in their lives (ably played by Taylor Miller, Jennifer Morrison, and Mary Kay Cook). The movie’s own design becomes apparent too early, but a fine cast brings Cole’s quirky characters to life. 112 min.
