An enjoyable middle-period (1958) French noir by the gifted mannerist Jean-Pierre Melville. Melville himself plays one of two French journalists sent to trace a French delegate to the United Nations, only to discover that the man has died in the arms of his mistress; with Pierre Grasset, Christiane Eudes, and Ginger Hall; the jazz score features Christian Chevallier and Martial Solal, with an appearance by Art Simmons.
