Do I Sound Gay?

Documentary maker David Thorpe interrogates popular perceptions of gay men and explores gay men’s perceptions of themselves, talking to friends, celebrities, and folks on the street. As with many such informal documentaries on social issues, the results are hit-or-miss, though Thorpe’s conversational tone is ingratiating. Particularly compelling is his montage of scenes from Disney animations, which demonstrates how the studio consistently associated villainy with stereotypically gay mannerisms; less so are the passages in which Thorpe recounts how he felt about his own voice at different stages of life.
