Fans of the Bollywood megahit Don (1978) may be disappointed by this slick update. Shahrukh Khan does an admirable job in the dual role of a ruthless Malaysia-based crime boss and the naive street musician recruited to take his place by a crooked police chief (Boman Irani). The special effects are spot-on, the song-and-dance numbers adequate; the stunning action sequences include karate ace Priyanka Chopra kicking hoodlum ass, a free-fall fistfight, and a high-altitude chase along the catwalk linking the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur. Some confusing plot twists in the second half leave the door wide open for a sequel. Directed by Farhan Akhtar (whose father, Javed, cowrote the original). In Hindi with subtitles. 171 min.
