Jennifer Lopez doesn’t sing, but as the feisty wife, caretaker, and enabler of Puerto Rican salsa star Hector Lavoe, she throws herself so wholeheartedly into this cliche-ridden biopic it can’t help but recall the Judy Garland version of A Star Is Born. Marc Anthony plays the smack-addicted singer, who has some dynamite numbers but not much to say for himself. Writer-director Leon Ichaso presents the whole chronology of Lavoe’s professional life in numbing proportion, with such intriguing episodes as the star’s Santeria cure for addiction given the same weight as his showbiz accomplishments.
