The doomed love of a handsome count (Thommy Berggren) for a circus performer (Pia Degermark). Director Bo Widerberg was a Swedish film critic who set out to challenge the hegemony of Ingmar Berman, but though this 1967 film is pretty-pretty rather than dark and gloomy, it’s ultimately in the Bergman camp of stylish suffering. There is craft here and some talent, but the soap opera elements were what made the film an international success.
