In this amusing 2008 documentary, New York journalist Nick Rosen travels across the continental U.S. to Hawaii and India as he explores different varieties of yoga. The teachers interviewed range from the profound (the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, a leading proponent of Ashtanga yoga) to the profane (wrestler-turned-fitness-guru Dallas Page, who rates poses by how much they emphasize his female students’ breasts). Tensions surface when director Kate Churchill, a longtime yoga devotee, realizes that encounters with spirituality are lost on the skeptical Rosen, who’s kept up his guard throughout their lengthy journey. He’s too bland to hold center stage, but the movie still works as a concise introduction to the meditative process. 82 min.
