Nominally a tribute to the energy of the Soviet people as they set about the first Five Year Plan, this 1931 feature was the first sound film by Russia’s most aggressive experimentalist, Dziga Vertov, and it contains a number of his typically radical touches. I still find Vertov more interesting in the abstract than in the concrete, but his movies should be seen, particularly because they so often serve as inspiration for politically committed filmmakers. Roll over, Eisenstein.
