Mistreated by her husband and denied justice by the law, a young mother runs away and joins a band of women pirates, whose first project is to kidnap a government minister and chain him up in a literal evocation of the bonds of matrimony. Years later, her son—not knowing who she really is—heads up an expedition to capture her. V. Shantaram directed this Indian epic fantasy, which became one of the first Indian films to attract international attention when it was shown at the 1936 Venice festival.
