Matthew McConaughey’s last hit, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), was one of those comedies in which the lovers spend the entire movie deceiving each other, then fall into each other’s arms. This dud is even more contrived: McConaughey still lives with his parents at age 35, so mom (Kathy Bates) and dad (sportscaster Terry Bradshaw) hire a counselor (Sarah Jessica Parker) who specializes in romancing guys until they leave the nest. (What keeps them from moving back in after she ends the charade isn’t explained.) The movie’s notion of humor is exemplified by Bradshaw’s extended nude scene, which might be termed “roughing the viewer.” Tom Dey directed; with Zooey Deschanel, providing occasional relief as Parker’s acrid roommate. PG-13, 92 min.
