This slick remake of Alan Parker’s 1980 musical follows a diverse group of teens through four years at LaGuardia Arts, the famous performing arts high school in Manhattan. Director Kevin Tancharoen, once a choreographer for Madonna and Jennifer Lopez, knows how to showcase dancers, but few of his young actors transcend their stereotypical roles (only Collins Pennie, as a Harlem rapper, and Naturi Naughton, as a pianist and emerging singer, register any real emotions). The high school is so sanitized that there are no drugs, cutthroat competition, or—inconceivably for a theatrical milieu—no gay students. With Debbie Allen, Charles S. Dutton, Kelsey Grammer, Megan Mullally, and Bebe Neuwirth.
