The fifth installment in the franchise that began with The Fast and the Furious (2001) pulls together veterans from the first four, headed by Vin Diesel as the car-crazy thief and Paul Walker as the lawman turned outlaw. It also notably increases the number of chase sequences and resets the action to a fantasy Rio de Janeiro, whose streets have rarely seemed less safe and whose police seem incapable of enforcing even the simplest traffic laws. Dwayne Johnson hops aboard as a stern U.S. agent hot on Diesel’s trail, and the whole thing progresses to one of the looniest heists of all time. The result is the most exciting, visually jazzy, and absurd entry in the series. Justin Lin directed a script by Chris Morgan.
