A watchable, occasionally charming, but less than stirring 1993 Italian feature by Paolo and Vittorio Taviani, about Tuscany and a family curse. It?s set between the time of Napoleon’s invasion and the present, and if one wanted to be charitable he might compare it to William Faulkner’s Absalom, Absalom! as a saga about the passionate coexistence of the past and present. The problem is, Faulkner’s novel is a lot more passionate; one feels it had to be written, but one seldom feels this movie had to be made. As storytelling it certainly beats the Disney period adventures it occasionally evokes, but it’s far from prime Taviani material. With Michael Vartan; cowritten by Sandro Petraglia.
