Freaky offers up fun with a side of fear. A twisted take on the standard body-swap movie, this horror-comedy follows high school senior Millie (Kathryn Newton) who switches bodies with the town serial killer, The Butcher (Vince Vaughn). Millie must break the spell in less than 24 hours by stabbing The Butcher with the same “mystical, ancient dagger” he stabbed her with first, or the changes will remain permanent. Mapped over quintessential teen films, Freaky calls to mind many movies, even blatantly winking at some classics, but will most likely remind viewers of The Hot Chick. Like the 2002 comedy, a lot of Freaky‘s humor comes from a dowdy degenerate adopting a teenage girl’s mannerisms and trying to convince those around them that they are who they say they are. Unlike The Hot Chick, however, Freaky is packed with gnarly kills worthy of the genre, making the film feel fresh.
