Hot on the high heels of Charles Busch’s drag comedy Die Mommie Die comes this weirdly similar project starring New York cabaret favorites Miss Coco Peru (Clinton Leupp) and Varla Jean Merman (Jeffery Roberson), as well as the title character of the 2002 short Evie Harris: Shining Star (again played by Jack Plotnick). As in Busch’s movie, the protagonist (Miss Harris) is a washed-up Hollywood celebrity dreaming of a comeback; both stories climax with the heroine blurting a scandalous secret after being drugged against her will. First-time director Richard Day, a seasoned TV producer, delivers a steady stream of cheerful vulgarity and a few clever gags, though Mommie comes out ahead thanks to Philip Baker Hall’s crotchety performance. 79 min.
