This unpredictable horror fantasy is the most exciting Brazilian feature I’ve seen since Kleber Mendonça Filho’s Neighboring Sounds (2012). It begins as a naturalistic drama about a black, working-class woman from the outskirts of São Paolo who becomes personal assistant to a rich, white, pregnant woman in the city center. Juliana Rojas and Marco Dutra, directing their own script, use the women’s relationship to explore racial and class-bound tensions in contemporary Brazil before taking the story in surprising directions: first the women enter into a sexual relationship, then the employer reveals that her unborn baby’s father was a werewolf. Things get even stranger from there, but the tone grows increasingly delicate and sweet; in fact the film ends up feeling like a fairy tale. In Portuguese with subtitles.
