The young lover and lucky protégé of French director Olivier Assayas (Carlos, Summer Hours), Mia Hansen-Love first distinguished herself as a filmmaker with Father of My Children (2009), which won a special jury prize at the Cannes film festival. This follow-up centers on a beautiful 15-year-old (Lola Creton of Bluebeard) who’s so in love with her devil-may-care boyfriend (Sebastian Urzendowsky) that she threatens to throw herself into the Seine if he ever leaves. After he ditches her for a prolonged tour of South America and eventually stops writing, she takes up with a middle-aged architect (Magne-Havard Brekke), only to be torn romantically when her free-spirited young beau turns up again. On paper this may sound like soap opera, but the movie shares with Father of My Children a gentle tone and credible, unforced acting. In French with subtitles.
