The message must have got lost somewhere in the plot twists of this would-be topical thriller about the power of hearsay on a college campus. A bitter, inscrutable slut—the filmmakers should have limited James Marsden’s screen time or written him a part—shares a secret and his cloyingly art-directed loft with two roommates. Lena Headey puts him off so he’ll keep wanting her, and Norman Reedus mumbles about chaos theory as he rehashes the story line by feverishly making a multimedia collage. Eric Bogosian has a small part as a journalism professor who berates an auditorium full of extras for spreading rumors about a date rape that have led to an arrest. Davis Guggenheim directed a screenplay by Gregory Poirier and Theresa Rebeck.
