Japanese shock master Takashi Miike (Audition, Ichi the Killer) ventures into David Lynch territory with this surreal and ultimately exhausting “yakuza horror film.” A thug is sent to execute his beloved mentor, but when the body disappears, he slips into a nightmare world dominated by slime, ominously ringing telephones, and characters one step away from a carnival freak show. Much of the imagery will seem gratuitously bizarre to those unschooled in Japanese mythology, but even the culturally initiated may be taken aback by the prolifically lactating innkeeper and the rectal soup-ladle electrocution. In Japanese with subtitles. R, 130 min.
