Shani Grewal directed this 1998 British sex comedy. Sanjay, a young Punjabi artist living in London, won’t commit to marry his part-African girlfriend, Jill; after she leaves him he has two one-night stands, and his friends wager that he’ll seduce five more women, making him a “guru.” Sanjay punctuates his trysts with self-consciously cute asides to the audience, apparently a nod to Alfie (1966). The film touches on issues of race and ethnicity—Sanjay’s family disapprove of Jill and try to marry Sanjay off to a Punjabi girl—but they’re played down in the film’s quest for laughs, which can include mocking a woman who’s crying hysterically. Rapid camera movement affects a documentary look inappropriate to this calculated and manipulative story.
