Walter Matthau plays a man who may be dying, and his daughters—Meg Ryan, Lisa Kudrow, and Diane Keaton—feel varying degrees of responsibility for his care. Keaton, who plays a megalomaniac, also directed this not particularly sensitive or funny comedy-drama. It’s maudlin without being insightful or even moving, flashing back to childhood memories and more recent traumas as if we need the details—and cloying art direction—to appreciate that adults have complicated feelings toward parents who’ve disappointed and hurt them. Delia Ephron wrote the screenplay (based on her novel) with her sister Nora. 94 min.
