I saw several parents drag their children out of the theater during the first few minutes of this large-format 3-D chiller, which only gets more intense as it goes on. As Johnny travels deep into the underworld, most of the sequences are distracting enough to obscure the conceptual glitches, though his curiosity/foolhardiness isn’t explained by an earnest voice-over. The figurative and virtual roller-coaster ride climaxes in a gorgeously disturbing sequence involving antique mirrors that reveal scenes of hideous torture; they don’t seem to leave anything to the imagination, but they do. Written and directed by Ben Stassen; with Jasper Steverlinck and voices by Harry Shearer.
