The LA police pursue a crazed cop killer. This low-budget thriller from 1948 is credited to Alfred Werker, an interesting director in his own right (Shock), but much of the work—including the spectacular sewer chase at the finale—was done by Anthony Mann, here at the height of his inventiveness as a film noir stylist. With Richard Basehart, Scott Brady, and Whit Bissell; photography by Mann’s favorite collaborator, John Alton.
