The absurd premise of this candy-colored movie (2003)—a young woman embarks on a quest to find an obscure track by a Taiwanese pop star in the hope it will bring back her estranged boyfriend—is writer-director Aubrey Lam’s pretext for creating a cast of eccentrics, beginning with a painfully shy record store owner who introduces the girl to a loopy underground of music collectors. Like many of her contemporaries, Lam is greatly influenced by Western pop culture of the 60s and 70s, but beneath the pastel surfaces and bouncy pop tunes is a serious meditation on urban alienation, unrequited love, and the healing mnemonic power of music. With Shawn Yu, Po Le-tung, and Daniel Wu. In Cantonese with subtitles. 85 min.
