In this dark French comedy (2008), a family unravels after a long-abandoned highway re-opens at the doorstep of their rural home. For ten years serene housewife Isabelle Huppert, her blue-collar husband, and their three children have bonded in near-isolation, playing roller hockey on the deserted tarmac or frolicking nude without fear of prying eyes. Once thousands of cars begin speeding daily past their front yard (or pile up in vacation gridlock), the older daughter flees and the rest of the family turns inward, converting their house into a survivalist’s bunker. Director Ursula Meier, who started as an assistant to Alain Tanner, walks a fine line between the quotidian and the absurd, but falls short of a satisfying payoff. In French with subtitles. 98 min.
