In this guerrilla documentary, Chinese filmmaker Nanfu Wang spotlights the human rights activism of Ye Haiyan, a sex worker in Hainan province who tried to mobilize international support for six schoolgirls who were raped by their principal. Human rights attorney Wang Yu alleges that this crime was only the tip of the iceberg, and that school administrators routinely bribe officials by supplying them with underage girls. Both Haiyan and the filmmaker are subjected to endless physical harassment by anonymous goons, and the chaotic audio and video footage of these altercations generates enormous drama even as it eclipses the issues at hand; though undeniably heroic, the documentary dwells less on its subject than on its own production.
