Leaden direction sinks this 2006 adaptation of Carl Hiaasen’s award-winning novel for young adults. An official from the Justice Department relocates his family to sunny Coconut Cove, Florida, where his son (Logan Lerman) and two cohorts try to prevent rapacious developers from bulldozing a habitat for endangered owls. Writer-director Wil Shriner tends to sit on almost every shot, killing any comic momentum (sequences with Luke Wilson as a dim-bulb cop are particularly witless), and ominous scenes involving cottonmouths and rottweilers are glibly resolved. With Clark Gregg, Tim Blake Nelson, and Jimmy Buffett. PG, 105 min.
