A bright, funny family movie (2009) that gets everything right, from story to production design to cast (both human and canine). Based on a children’s novel by Lois Duncan, it stars Emma Roberts (Nancy Drew) and newcomer Jake T. Austin as orphaned siblings who scheme to keep their Jack Russell terrier a secret from their ditzy, selfish foster parents (Lisa Kudrow and Kevin Dillon). When the pooch sniffs out a couple of homeless dogs in a shuttered hotel, the kids transform the dive into a secret haven of romper rooms for their pet and dozens of strays. Don Cheadle anchors the movie’s serious side as a social worker, and director Thor Freudenthal shows a sensibility as playful as that of his four-legged characters.
