The straight-male romantic subtext of Judd Apatow’s Superbad and Knocked Up gets a more overt workout in this comedy scripted by lesser lights John Hamburg (Along Came Polly) and Larry Levin (Doctor Dolittle). Paul Rudd stars as a “girlfriend guy” with no close male friends; in need of a best man for his wedding, he goes looking for a new pal and finds one in shambling Jason Segel, who reconnects him with his inner Rush fan. Both actors are Apatow veterans, though Rudd steals the show with his painfully awkward attempts at male braggadocio. Apatow became the hottest comedy director in the business by seamlessly combining relationship comedy that didn’t bore the guys and wild comedy that didn’t nauseate the girls; this is a knockoff, pure and simple, but its wit and ingenuous characters prove how far the bar’s been raised. Hamburg directed; with Rashida Jones, Andy Samberg, J.K. Simmons, Jane Curtin, Jon Favreau, and Jaime Pressly. R, 104 min.
