Netflix’s latest animated short follows a couple grappling with the death of a young child. Equal parts heartbreaking and heartwarming, If Anything Happens, I Love You is reminiscent of the popular Pixar shorts that can move you from laughter to tears in mere minutes. Written and directed by Will McCormack and Michael Govier, the film’s mostly black-and-white shading is sprinkled with hues of color as we reminisce on happier times with the family before the inevitable loss. The title takes on a devastating new meaning in the last few minutes when the film takes things a step further by portraying the all-too-common tragedy of school shootings. With Netflix aiming to cast a wider net over the animation world, If Anything Happens, I Love You is a bittersweet addition that sadly will hit close to home for parents and nonparents alike.
