I’ll confess that I was largely fooled by this faux-documentary about the drug-fueled meltdown of actor Joaquin Phoenix, but when the news broke that it was all a hoax, my reaction was “So what?” Phoenix and director Casey Affleck seem to have been assaying a comment on the public schadenfreude that greets every Lindsay Lohan-style drama of celebrity self-destruction. But since I don’t perv on that stuff, I didn’t feel implicated. To give credit where it’s due, Phoenix does turn in a heck of a performance, but the film is still a drag.
