Eddie Murphy strikes the right balance between silliness and pathos in this screwball family comedy (2009), starring as a divorced, workaholic financial analyst who so neglects his seven-year-old daughter (charmer Yara Shahidi) that she retreats into fantasy. When he discovers that her invisible friends are capable of picking lucrative investments, he changes his tune and begins scheduling playtime alongside her. Director Karey Kirkpatrick (Over the Hedge) mines laughter from human fallibility, aided by a strong supporting cast that includes Martin Sheen as the boss and Thomas Haden Church as an office rival, of Native American descent, who couches his financial tips in shamanic lore.
