In early-50s Prague, a police detective investigating a murder uncovers an ongoing government plot to frame Jewish citizens for treasonous crimes. This handsome period drama by David Ondricek uses the Soviet oppression of Czechoslovakia as the backdrop for a modestly entertaining, old-fashioned mystery; when the historical context comes into the foreground near the end, it’s all the more unsettling for having been hidden in plain sight. This can be stodgy in its storytelling, but the lavish production design and atmospheric photography are always pleasing. In subtitled Czech, German, and Polish.
